Anthropic takes $5B from Amazon and pledges $100B in cloud spending in return

anthropic announced On Monday, Amazon agreed to invest a new $5 billion, bringing Amazon’s total investment in the company to $13 billion. Anthropic, for its part, has agreed to spend more than $100 billion over the next ten years on AWS to acquire up to 5GW of new computing capacity to train and run the cloud.

The deal is reminiscent of the agreement Amazon made with OpenAI just two months ago, when it joined $110 billion funding round – A $50 billion contribution – which valued the ChatGPT maker at a $730 billion pre-money valuation. That deal was also structured in part as cloud infrastructure services rather than straight cash.

At the center of the deal are Amazon’s custom chips: Graviton (a low-power CPU), and Trenium (an Nvidia competitor and AI accelerator chip). The Anthropic deal specifically covers Trenium2 through Trenium4 chips, even though Trenium4 chips are not currently available. The latest chip, the Trenium3, was released in December. In addition, Anthropic has reserved the option to purchase capacity on future Amazon chips as they become available.

We’ll see if this news is a teaser for Anthropic announcing a new funding round. VC is reportedly offering AI company capital in a deal It is worth $800 billion or more.
