American senators voted heavy to remove one on Tuesday Controversial 10 years ban Report on the capabilities of the states to regulate AI from the Trump administration’s “Big Beautiful Bill” Axis,
The provision of reconciliation bill was introduced by Sen Ted Cruise (R-TX). Several major Silicon Valley officials-including Sam Altman of Openi, Palmer Lucky of Enduril, and Mark Andresen of A16Z-were in favor of “AI Moraterium”, which he said he would prevent states from creating an unnatural patchwork of regulation that could stop AI innovation.
Opposition to the provision became a bilateral issue, as most Democrats and several Republicans warned that the ban on state regulation would harm consumers, and powerful AI companies would be allowed to work with little inspection. Critics also objected to Cruise’s plan to tie compliance with Federal Broadband Funding.
After the provision was back and forth, Sen Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) on Monday offered an amendment to snatch the provision with Sen Maria Cantwell (D-WA).
Blackburn originally opposed this provision, but he came to a compromise with Cruise over the weekend that reduced the proposed ban from ten years to five. Then on Monday, he pulled his support for a complete provision.
The Senate voted 99–1 to snatch the AI adjournment.
