Google has given the US Department of Defense access to its AI for classified networks, allowing essentially all lawful uses, According to several news reports.
The deal follows Anthropic’s Public stance against Trump administration After the model manufacturer refused to offer similar terms to the DoD. The Pentagon wanted unrestricted use of AI, while Anthropic wanted guardrails to prevent its AI from being used for domestic mass surveillance and autonomous weapons.
Because Anthropic refused those use cases, the DoD labeled the model maker a “supply-chain risk” – a designation typically reserved for foreign adversaries. Anthropic and DOD are now embroiled in a lawsuit A judge granted Anthropic an injunction last month against the designation while the case moves forward.
Google is the third AI company to try to turn Anthropic’s losses to its advantage. OpenAI immediately signed an agreement With DoD, As done by xAI. Google’s agreement includes some language that says it does not intend for its AI to be used in domestic mass surveillance or autonomous weapons, similar to the contract language with OpenAI, The Wall Street Journal reports. But it’s not clear whether such provisions are legally binding or enforceable, according to the WSJ.
Google has made this deal when its 950 employees have signed an open letter Told him to follow Anthropic’s lead and not sell AI to the Defense Department without similar guardrails. Google did not respond to a request for comment.
