ESPN’s Sam Tighe on the future of Bournemouth striker Junior Crupi.
Last weekend at The Emirates, Crupi became the first teenager to reach the 10-goal mark in a Premier League season in decades. He joins the likes of Wayne Rooney, Robbie Fowler and Robbie Keane among the select list of special players to achieve the feat – and if their careers are anything to go by, Bournemouth’s young sensation has something special in store for him.
His goal against Arsenal may have been a simple back-post tap, but the France U21 international has spent the season developing a reputation for scoring spectacular goals. For example: the long-range strike he directed against Nottingham Forest in October, which he slammed into the roof of the net against Wolves in January or – much to the Gunners’ dismay – the beautifully scored goal he scored from outside the box during their first matchup of the season.
In addition to sweet, sweet ball-striking, he has shown some very quick feet in tight spaces, an appreciation for linkup play and the ability to flick a pass into the path of a runner. It’s likely he will become a full-fledged number 9 in the future, but for now, he is effectively a shadow striker – someone who plays forward, finds space to work in and takes shots wherever possible.
Not only is he getting on the goal reel significantly, but his shot conversion rate – 28% (10 goals from 38 shots) – is the best on Opta’s records for any teenager who has taken 30 or more shots since the 2003–04 season.
