after wilson contreras And willier abreu With a long home run in the fourth inning to give Boston a 10–2 lead, Valdez hit a 94 mph fastball to Story on the next pitch. Story stares down the mound as the Tigers catch dylan dingler And plate umpire Adam Beck got between Story and Valdez.
The benches were cleared after this, although no punches were thrown.
Valdez was eventually thrown out by third base umpire Dan Issogna, ending a night in which he allowed 10 runs – seven earned – ultimately over three innings. 10-3 Red Sox win.
“It was not intentional,” Valdez said through an interpreter. “It might seem like it, but it wasn’t. I was trying to throw a strike after two home runs in a row. I was trying to get back in the zone and that pitch went out of my hand.”
However, Hinch did not favor the first-year Tigers pitcher.
“We play a very good brand of baseball here. It didn’t feel like it,” said the Detroit manager, who spoke to an angry Contreras after everyone was on the field. “It’s not judging intent; I have no idea. But I know when you go out on the field and you get into those collisions, you usually feel like you’re right. And it doesn’t feel good to be there.
“So I understand their frustration. I understand that moment, and it was a low moment of a frustrating night.”
For Boston, it was a unifying moment amid a rough start to the season.
“They’re my guys, and it means a lot to me,” Story said, referring to teammates running onto the field. “We spend a lot of time together and it’s always nice to see that they support you.”
Meanwhile, Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy did not accept Valdez’s excuse.
“Yeah, I guess [it was intentional],” Tracy told reporters. ”I thought it was weak, and I thought everyone saw that. Their side, our side, I think everybody saw it. And yes, it was weak.”
Valdez’s suspension will be detrimental for the Tigers, who have three healthy starting pitchers, with Tarik Skubal (elbow), Casey Mize (hamstring) and Justin Verlander (hip) all on the injured list.
