Durham, NC – Grandson of Retired ruler Basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski was charged with driving while impaired in connection with a collision involving a 15-year-old bicyclist.
Joseph Savarino, 26, admitted to drinking alcohol before the incident Saturday night and his blood-alcohol concentration was measured at 0.11% in a Breathalyzer test, according to Durham County court records. The legal limit is 0.08%.
Police said Savarino’s vehicle struck the boy who was riding his bike in northwest Durham. Investigation is ongoing.
Savarino appeared in court for the first time on Monday and a judge suspended his driver’s license before releasing him on a $100,000 secured bond. The bond was posted by Debbie Savarino, Joseph’s mother and Krzyzewski’s daughter. He is the assistant athletic director at Duke.
Joseph Savarino’s attorney, Butch Williams, did not immediately respond to telephone and email messages left at his office. Savarino’s next court appearance is May 20.
Another of Krzyzewski’s grandsons and Savarino’s brother, Michael Savarino, pleaded guilty to DWI in July 2022 following an arrest in November 2021 while operating a vehicle owned by then-Duke star Paolo Banchero. Michael Savarino was sentenced to 12 months of probation and was required to complete a treatment program as part of his plea agreement, along with community service and fines.
Michael Savarino, who was 20 at the time of his arrest, appeared in 13 games as a walk-on for Duke. The charge of aiding and abetting DWI against Banchero was dropped.
