Philadelphia–the 76ers Picked a good time to play his most complete game of the season.

The Celtics have ended Embiid’s season in the playoffs three times: in Game 5 of the 2018 Conference Semifinals, in a first-round sweep in 2020 and in a second-round series in 2023, which went away after the Celtics came from behind to win Game 6 in Philadelphia.
No team has gone 3-1 down as many times as Philadelphia without winning a series. He has lost all 18 times. The 76ers will try to make it 1-18 Saturday at the TD Garden.
The 76ers earned this opportunity by playing a great all-around game in front of the home crowd on Thursday. They controlled the possession game, always the Celtics’ strong suit, and held Boston to under 30% shooting from 3 for the third time this series.
In Boston’s three wins, the Celtics made an average of 20 3s and shot 41.7% from 3. They are 17-1 under coach Joe Mazzulla when they shoot 40% from 3 and 19-9 when they are below that mark.

“He was huge, man,” Maxie said of George. “That was huge. Paul has been really great. He’s been consistently good. He’s a great voice, a great leader for all of us, and we appreciate that.”
And then there was Embiid, who was out just three weeks earlier having an emergency appendectomy in Houston. Although his touch is still poor – he made 6 of 18 shots, including 1 of 5 from 3, and is now 2-16 from 3-point range in the three games played in this series – he had eight assists for just one turnover and provided Philadelphia with a safe harbor from which to operate its offense.

But even after consistently strong performances, Embiid’s return and matchups that seem to yield some advantages, Philadelphia coach Nick Nurse cautioned anyone reading too much into the way the 76ers have played the past few games.
“I think we played really well. I guess it doesn’t really matter that much,” Nurse said. “I mean, we’ve seen games like this. It’s just a game. It’s a story. And you’re going to go back, and it’s not just going to be flipped a switch and happen again. … We have to really focus deeply and prepare and be ready to adjust, and we have to put in a tremendous effort.
“It’s nice to win something in a row and it’s nice to win, play the way we played tonight, but it doesn’t really matter. Every game has its own game.”
