Philadelphia–the 76ers Picked a good time to play his most complete game of the season.
paul george Played his best game of his two years in Philadelphia, joel embiid Flirted with the triple-double, tyreese maxi Scored 30 points and the Sixers never trailed on the way to the A’s 106-93 A win over the Boston Celtics in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
As a result, the best-of-seven series is tied 3-3, with a decisive Game 7 in Boston on Saturday.
“I’ve been playing with these guys for so long,” Embiid said with a smile afterward, referring to the Celtics. “I’m tired of losing to them. So we have a chance to accomplish something special.”
“They are a great team. When you look at everything they have, they are a super team, so we have to carry on with the mentality we have had for the last two games.”
There will be a lot of history at stake Saturday in one of the NBA’s most bitter rivalries. Boston has eliminated Philadelphia from the playoffs in six consecutive contests. The last time the 76ers eliminated the Celtics in the postseason was 1982.
The Celtics have ended Embiid’s season in the playoffs three times: in Game 5 of the 2018 Conference Semifinals, in a first-round sweep in 2020 and in a second-round series in 2023, which went away after the Celtics came from behind to win Game 6 in Philadelphia.
No team has gone 3-1 down as many times as Philadelphia without winning a series. He has lost all 18 times. The 76ers will try to make it 1-18 Saturday at the TD Garden.
The 76ers earned this opportunity by playing a great all-around game in front of the home crowd on Thursday. They controlled the possession game, always the Celtics’ strong suit, and held Boston to under 30% shooting from 3 for the third time this series.
In Boston’s three wins, the Celtics made an average of 20 3s and shot 41.7% from 3. They are 17-1 under coach Joe Mazzulla when they shoot 40% from 3 and 19-9 when they are below that mark.
“I think we’re playing into their hands a little bit,” Celtics guard jaylen brown Said. “I definitely think, even myself, what type of shots, what type of things they want us to do. It’s not what we’ve been doing all year. But maybe a change in your approach can open up some things for us offensively.”
But Thursday’s game was not so easy as Boston missed its shots. The 76ers controlled the numbers game, hitting more shots, something the Celtics often excel at against their opponents. Maxi, despite having the ball in his hands on almost every possession on the court, did not commit any turnovers in nearly 40 minutes.
George, on the other hand, may have had his most complete game with the 76ers, averaging 23 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block in 39 minutes. He also played strong defense on Boston’s wings and made many timely shots.
“He was huge, man,” Maxie said of George. “That was huge. Paul has been really great. He’s been consistently good. He’s a great voice, a great leader for all of us, and we appreciate that.”
And then there was Embiid, who was out just three weeks earlier having an emergency appendectomy in Houston. Although his touch is still poor – he made 6 of 18 shots, including 1 of 5 from 3, and is now 2-16 from 3-point range in the three games played in this series – he had eight assists for just one turnover and provided Philadelphia with a safe harbor from which to operate its offense.
he also did not allow jayson tatum And Brown took advantage of that in the pick-and-roll. The Celtics duo had solid but unspectacular games, including 35 points on 13-for-30 shooting with five assists and eight turnovers.
“You look at all the shots I’m taking, everything’s short, inside and out,” Embiid said.
He added, “I’m going to have a great night at some point. Hopefully it’s the next game.”
Tatum left the court in the third quarter after suffering an apparent problem with the lower part of his left foot, an obvious concern as the superstar forward approaches the one-year anniversary of the torn right Achilles tendon he suffered in last season’s Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Giants. new York Knicks.
Tatum headed back to the locker room after resting and returned to the bench at the beginning of the fourth quarter. However, at that point, with Philadelphia leading 88–65, Majulla decided to wave the white flag with 10:24 remaining and while in their deep bench.
Later, Mazzulla said that Tatum did not suffer any injury, and Tatum himself downplayed it, saying that it should have no impact on his availability going forward.
“Yeah, you all probably saw when I went back, saw me on the bike,” Tatum said. “When I came out in the third quarter my leg was a little stiff. But, you know, judging in that moment, like the game was a little out of reach. We took the starters out and let the bench guys come in.”
The Celtics are trying to advance to the playoffs for the ninth time in 10 years and defeat Philadelphia for the seventh consecutive time. But even after consistently strong performances, Embiid’s return and matchups that seem to yield some advantages, Philadelphia coach Nick Nurse cautioned anyone reading too much into the way the 76ers have played the past few games.
“I think we played really well. I guess it doesn’t really matter that much,” Nurse said. “I mean, we’ve seen games like this. It’s just a game. It’s a story. And you’re going to go back, and it’s not just going to be flipped a switch and happen again. … We have to really focus deeply and prepare and be ready to adjust, and we have to put in a tremendous effort.
“It’s nice to win something in a row and it’s nice to win, play the way we played tonight, but it doesn’t really matter. Every game has its own game.”
