Dover, Fla. ,WFLA) A woman from a fluorida wants to warn others after a detailed AI-managed scheme, who used clone audio of her daughter’s voice to demand thousands of dollars in fake bond money.
Sharon Brightwell told Nexstar’s WFLA that The Ordal started on Wednesday when she received a call from a number that looked like her daughter. At the other end of the line, a young woman was claiming to be in a car accident.
“There is no one who could explain to me that it was not his,” Sharon said. “I know my daughter has a cry.”
The caller said that he had hit a pregnant woman while texting and driving and claimed that her phone was taken by the police. A man again found on the line, representing his daughter claiming to be a lawyer. He told Sharon that his daughter was being detained and needed $ 15,000 in bail in cash.
“He gave very specific instructions,” said Sharon. “He told me that it could not tell the bank what the money was, it can affect my daughter’s credit.”
After his instructions, he withdrew the money and placed it in a box as directed. A driver showed his house to take the package.
But it did not stop there.
Sharon received another call, stating that the unborn child had died and the family, described as “Christian people”, agreed not to sue her daughter if she offers another $ 30,000.
When his grandson stepped inside. He was on a phone with a family friend who called Sharon directly on the line with his real daughter.
“I shouted,” said Sharon. “When I heard her voice, I broke. She was fine. She was still at work.”
The family believes that the suspects used video of Facebook or other social media to create an AI-borne replica of their daughter’s voice.
“I pray that it doesn’t happen to anyone else,” Sharon said. “My husband and I have recently retired. That money was our savings.”
Now, Family is urging others to take precautionsIn emergency situations, including creating a private “code word” to verify the identity on the phone.
“If they can’t give it to you,” Sharon said, “Hang and call them straight.”
A report has been filed with the Hillsboro County Sheriff Office. Family also launched oneGofondme campaignTo help fix their financial loss.
