Elon Musk recently outlined ambitious plans for a chip-building collaboration between his companies Tesla and SpaceX.
Bloomberg report Musk shared his plans at an event in downtown Austin, Texas, on Saturday night, along with a photo showing that what Musk is calling a “TerraFab” facility will be built near Tesla’s Austin headquarters and “Gigafactory.”
Musk said he is working on the project because semiconductor manufacturers are not making chips quickly enough for his companies’ artificial intelligence and robotics needs: “We either build TerraFab or we don’t have the chips, and we need chips, so we build TerraFab.”
The goal is to build chips that can support 100 to 200 gigawatts of computing power per year on Earth, as well one terawatt in spaceMusk said. He did not give any time limit for these schemes.
As Bloomberg noted, Musk has no background in semiconductor manufacturing, but he has a history with it. highly promising But Target And deadline.
