robotics company sunday has raised a new funding round, valuing the company at unicorn status, which would mean more than $1 billion announced On Thursday.
Sunday says it has raised $165 million in a Series B round led by Coatue Management at a valuation of $1.15 billion. Other investors in the round include Tiger Global, Benchmark and Bain Capital Ventures.
The company emerged from secrecy late last year and already has 1,000 people on its waiting list, Bloomberg report.
Sunday, founded by Tony Zhao and Cheng Chi, is on a quest to create a household humanoid robot called Memo that helps with tasks like laundry and clearing tables.
Experts have been trying for decades to create such a robot – A variant of Rosie from “The Jetsons” — but have come up repeatedly due to a lack of training data to teach robots how to reliably grasp objects with different weights, textures, and fragility (for example, towels vs. wine glasses). As AI technology advances, a new range of robotic technologies are hitting the market, hoping to bring humanoid helpers to life once again.
