UK-based autonomous vehicle software company Wave raises $1.2B funding round working together Uber and Nissan are teaming up to launch a robotaxi service in Tokyo, with a pilot project scheduled for the end of 2026.
Under the deal, Wave will integrate its AI-powered, self-driving software into the Nissan Leaf, which will be available on Uber’s ride-hailing network, the companies said. This is Uber’s first robotaxi partnership in Japan, and also the latest in a series of deals in the pipeline between the ride-hailing giant and Wave.
Wave claims its autonomous software can work on any vehicle, with any hardware, and without the use of HD maps. The startup is gearing up: It’s working on launching Another robotaxi service with Uber in London, and is also integrating its driver-assistance technology into Nissan vehicles Scheduled for production in 2027.
Meanwhile, Uber continues to search for partners around the world as it looks to become a popular app to promote self-driving taxis. It has secured more than 25 partnerships so far. Earlier this week, it announced plans to make Zoox’s purpose-built robotaxi available on the Uber app in Las Vegas. later this year.
