OpenAI is reportedly asking contractors to upload real work from previous jobs
OpenAI and training data company Handshake AI is asking third-party contractors to upload actual work they did in past and current jobs. A report in Wired,
This appears to be part of a larger strategy by AI companies that are hiring contractors to generate high-quality training data in the hope that it will eventually allow their models to automate more white-collar work.
In the case of OpenAI, a presentation from the company reportedly asks contractors to describe work they’ve done in other jobs and to upload examples of “real, on-the-job work” they’ve done.In fact Done.” These examples might include “a concrete output (not a summary of the file, but the actual file), for example, Word doc, PDF, PowerPoint, Excel, image, repo.”
The company reportedly instructs contractors to remove proprietary and personally identifiable information before uploading, and to do so it points them to the ChatGPT “superstar scrubbing” tool.
Nonetheless, intellectual property attorney Evan Brown told Wired that any AI lab adopting this approach is “putting themselves at great risk” with an approach that requires “a lot of trust in their contractors to decide what is confidential and what is not.”
An OpenAI spokesperson declined to comment.
