DoorDash says it banned driver who seemingly faked a delivery using AI

DoorDash appears to have confirmed a viral story in which a driver is using an AI-generated photo to lie about making a delivery.

As Reported by NexstarAustin resident Bernd Hobart said he experienced the same thing when he wrote in a post on x: “Amazing. The DoorDash driver accepted the drive, immediately marked it as delivered, and submitted an AI-generated image of the DoorDash order (left) to our front door (right).”

After this, people started paying attention to his post. Hobart offered more detailsAdmitting that it would be “very easy” to fake his story. But he notes, “Someone chimed in downthread that the same thing happened to them, also in Austin, with the same driver display name.”

As far as how the driver accomplished this, Hobart speculates that he used a hacked account on a jailbroken phone, obtaining an image of his front door through the DoorDash feature, which shows photos of prior deliveries.

A DoorDash spokesperson told TechCrunch, “After immediately investigating this incident, our team permanently deleted Dasher’s account and ensured the customer made a full recovery. We have zero tolerance for fraud and use a combination of technology and human review to detect and stop bad actors abusing our platform.”
