Infrastructure service Cloudflare faced massive outages on Tuesday morning, shutting down access to many popular platforms like ChatGPS, Cloudflare, Spotify and others. Signal President Meredith Whitaker took the outage as an opportunity to explain the harms of Internet running on some infrastructure like Cloudflare and AWS.
“The question is not ‘Why does Signal use AWS?'” He wrote On BlueSky. “It’s about looking at the infrastructure requirements of any global, real-time, mass comms platform and asking how it is that we got to a place where there is no realistic alternative to AWS and other hyperscalers.”
