Google announced this on Thursday Buying 200,000 MT to remove carbon from candlestickA forest restoration company based in Brazil. The project would buy agricultural land in the Amazon and reforest it.
The deal was done through Symbiosis AllianceAn advance market commitment that aims to develop a market for nature-based carbon removal plans that is supported by Google, McKinsey, Meta, Microsoft and Salesforce. The Symbiosis alliance is similar to Frontier, an advance market commitment also supported by Google and others that supports direct air capture projects.
Nature-based carbon removal shows great promise in reducing CO2 level in the environment, but developing and selling projects has been challenging for various reasons. If nature-based projects are damaged by wildfires or other disasters, they risk falling short of their goals, and guaranteeing their long-term viability may be challenging.
Still, they bring many advantages: forests can replenish aquifers and support biodiversity, neither of which direct air capture can. Google said it would use its DeepMind PerchAI to help measure the biodiversity benefits of the project.
