Musk’s Boring Co. violated environmental regulations nearly 800 times, Nevada alleges

Nevada regulators say Elon Musk’s Boring Company, a tunneling and infrastructure firm, has repeatedly violated state environmental rules, even though the company has agreed not to do so.

The Boring Company, which is in the process of expanding a tunnel network under Las Vegas, is accused of nearly 800 violations. According According to a report by ProPublica. The nearly 100 violations came after the company signed an agreement with state regulators in 2022 that sought to force the company to comply with state laws.

Alleged violations include digging without approval, dumping untreated water on city streets, failing to erect silt fences and tracking dirt from construction sites onto nearby roadways.

The Boring Company could have been fined more than $3 million, but regulators decided to group some of the violations together, reducing the fine to $242,800.

The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection said that reducing the total amount provides “an appropriate penalty that will help deter future non-compliant conduct.”

There are plans to expand the Las Vegas tunnel system from a few miles today to 68 miles connecting 104 stations.

But that expansion has not been without other problems. The Boring Company had to suspend operations at the tunnel it is building for the Las Vegas airport in September due to a worker suffered a “crushing blow” When they became stuck between two 4,000-foot pipes.
