The Trump administration has asked the Supreme Court for permission to deploy the National Guard to the Chicago area amid pressure from President Trump to send troops to Democratic-led cities.
The Justice Department filed an emergency application in the high court on Friday, asking the justices to block a judge’s order blocking Trump from sending hundreds of National Guard members to Illinois.
“This Court should block the district court’s October 9 injunction in its entirety,” Solicitor General D. John Sawyer wrote in the administration’s request to the judges. “The injunction improperly encroaches on the President’s authority and unnecessarily endangers federal personnel and property.”
It is the first time judges have been asked to block Trump’s aggressive use of the National Guard.
