Senate Democrats agree to advance military construction, VA spending bill

Senate Democrats on Tuesday agreed to the military construction and the funding of the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) to carry forward funding for funding, after less than a week, Republican PBS, NPR and global support programs were ruled through a partial bill to save programs.

Twenty -seven Democrats voted for a proposal to move forward in the bill after holding a long lunchtime meeting in the Lindon Ban Johnson Room, away from the Senate floor to haveh away from their strategy. The law was upgraded by votes from 90 to 8.

The bill providing $ 153.5 billion in discretionary funding was dropped from the appropriation committee with 26-3 bipoisy votes.

This is the first appropriation bill for fiscal 2026 to proceed to the Senate floor.

This includes $ 342 million to support better access to rural health care, $ 3.5 billion for VA to help carers, and $ 3.5 billion to provide services and housing to homeless giants.

Democrats agreed to pursue the law, even though many of them are still angry to pass a rescue package on their GOP colleagues last week, approved for the corporation for public broadcasting and global support programs at $ 9 billion in Congress funding and global support programs.

The Senate Democratic Leader Chak Shumar (NY) defended the law to prepare with the input from the Democrat on the appropriation panel.

“First, it was done in a bipartisan process, there is no question about it. Second, it undo many terrible it. [Department of Government Efficiency] Cut the veterans and, third, we will have an amendment process, ”he said, given that the Democrats only voted for a proposal to start a floor debate on the law.

Senior Democrats voted to proceed in the bill, including the appropriation committee ranking member Patty Murray (Wash.) And the sensor.

Many progressives voted against transferring the bill, including sensors.

But Democrats are warning that they voted to start the bill on the bill, it does not mean that they would vote to pass it, especially if Republican blocks his ability to offer amendment.

Mercale, the ranking members of the appropriation sub -committee with jurisdiction over the internal department, are planned to offer an amendment that will prevent the Trump administration from offering additional rescue package under the impulse control act to return the funds already allotted by the Congress.

Shumar argued on the floor on Tuesday that Republican was reducing efforts to pass the bipartisan appropriation bill by extending rescue packages.

He said, “We will see how the floor process develops on the floor here.

He urged the Democrats to support the regular appropriation process on his Republican equivalent, Senate Magority Leader John Theun (SD) on “how to talk to both sides of his mouth”, but urged the participation bill for previous funding agreements.

“On the one hand, the leader Thyun says he wants a bipartisanship. Then, on the other hand, he is advancing the rescue packages on the floor. He is allowing party-line votes to reverse the bilateral funding agreements. Well, you can’t have both these ways,” Shumar warned.
