(Nexstar) – If you are planning for the next weekend and the weather forecast on your phone seems terrible, do not panic. The high temperature predicted by your phone can be very different until the roll around the larger day.
You may have been burnt first by a weather app, whether it reduces heat or underestimated the rain several days in advance. Nexstar’s senior meteorologist Gym Danner said that such apps may be wrong due to two main reasons.
First of all, an app is only as good as feeding data. Often, models being used to populate those forecasts are not transparent for the average person, and the quality application can vary widely from the app to the app. “Everyone now wants to apply a weather app,” said Danner. “So if everyone is doing it differently, then you are going to get different numbers.”
The second problem, the danner explained, is to do with the uncertainty to predict more than a few days.
“When you start getting seven days and beyond, you are really pushing the envelope,” he said. Danner, who has an iPhone, said in his experience, the standard apple weather app predicts the weather very well outside three to five days, but compared to being less accurate (as any forecast should be).
If you want a better shot in obtaining the correct forecast, Danner suggested the National Weather Service or his local TV meteorologist to check the forecast. Meteorologists who live in a market and work, know which weather models are the most accurate for seasonal patterns, topography and quirks of that region.
“When a forecaster comes on duty, the first order of his business is to become familiar with what is currently happening in the season. It involves satellite imagery, surface data, watching rain reports and getting a briefing from other forecasts on duty,” meteorologist Mark Blomer explained in a post in a post. They combine data with their knowledge of the atmosphere so that what will happen that day, tomorrow and beyond.
“Forecasters deal with many forecast models that run several times a day and should decide which people rely on the basis of how well they are looking to handle the current weather, how realistic their production is, and the forecast models are so consistent from one run to the next,” Bloomer continued. “Forecaster can also decide that no model can be trusted at that time.”
Danner said, “I spend more than an hour to keep my forecast together every morning,” remembering that when he worked as a local meteorologist in Texas. “These meteorologists make a living to know their region. … So you get that human touch.”
