Sources: Warriors’ brass meet with Kerr; will reconvene next week

for a long time Golden State Warriors Head coach Steve Kerr met with Controllers owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy for two hours on Monday, league sources told ESPN, as both sides continue to figure out whether Kerr remains as coach.

Both sides described the meeting as productive, but no resolution was reached nearly two weeks after the Warriors season ended in Phoenix. League sources said Kerr, Lacob and Dunleavy plan to meet again next week to continue discussions.

Kerr is going to cancel a previously planned golf trip this week as people around him describe Kerr as torn between his own choices.

“It’s April,” a source said. “We don’t need to rush.”

In the coming days the calendar will change to May. The draft lottery, the first notable offseason checkpoint, comes on May 10. The Warriors enter it in the 11th slot, with a 9.4 per cent chance of reaching the top four and a 77.6 per cent chance of finishing 11th.

The lottery pick is an important tool within the Warriors’ plan to rearrange the roster this upcoming summer, which is part of the equation in Kerr’s decision to return.

At this stage of his life and career – at age 60, he has just completed his 12th season in the same role – the consensus is that as a head coach, Kerr is still capable of leading a strong playoff contender built around Steph Curry and draymond greenBut this is not necessarily the fresh face of reconstruction.

“I still love coaching, but I’ve got this,” Kerr said the night the Warriors were eliminated. “All these jobs have an expiration date. There’s a race going on, and when the race ends, sometimes it’s time for new blood and new ideas.”

Team sources are adamant that this is purely a “basketball decision” based on Kerr’s desire to continue coaching, management’s desire to make some offensive philosophy and staffing changes and whether there is any collective belief that the Warriors will be able to use the offseason of transactions to improve their roster to compete in a crowded conference.

League sources said Warriors management has not begun any coaching search. This will only begin if Kerr chooses to depart.
