Seattle– mariners starter logan gilbert Wednesday can thank their jerseys for preventing at least one earned run.
With a runner on third in the Mariners’ first inning win 5-4 Above Exercise, carlos cortes The Seattle right-hander hit a line drive and the ball somehow got stuck in Gilbert’s jersey.
Gilbert clutched his stomach and turned to locate the ball as Cortes made his way down the first-base line, only to discover that he had actually caught it — well, sort of — in his shirt.
“It happened so quickly, I wasn’t quite sure what happened,” Gilbert said. “And then, I mean, I felt a little pain after that. So, had to take a second.”
Cortes was credited with a single because the play was considered dead, but Nick Kurtz Stayed at third base. Shea Langeliers Advance to second base.
Gilbert was aware of the rule under which Cortez was awarded first base, yet he considered himself fortunate.
“At first I thought I was very lucky to make the catch,” Gilbert said. “But I guess it wasn’t a catch. But at the same time, if they hit it like 110 with the bat, I don’t really feel like I deserve to be out there.”
Mariners head athletic trainer Kyle Torgerson briefly examined Gilbert, but he remained in the game and pitched the inning. After the game, in which Gilbert gave up three runs in four innings, he revealed that he had an injury to his stomach, as well as an injury to his left hand.
Otherwise, Gilbert said he’s fine, much to the relief of teammates like the first baseman Josh NaylorWho hit a walk-off single on Wednesday.
“Anything that comes back to the pitcher with that exit velocity is scary,” Naylor said. “You never know what’s going to happen. So, I’m glad he’s OK.”
Manager Dan Wilson praised Gilbert for his comeback, although he allowed two earned runs on a sacrifice fly. tyler soderstrom and an RBI single by Jeff McNeil In the first innings. After the game, Gilbert joked that he had no interest in being ejected from the game because the incident occurred so early in the game.
“That was crazy,” Gilbert said. “It was a weird thing, even getting through the jersey.”
