los angeles dodgers close to Edwin Diaz The team announced he would undergo surgery Wednesday to remove a loose body in his right elbow. The reliever is expected to be out for about three months, a source told ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez on Monday.
Los Angeles placed the 32-year-old Diaz on the 15-day injured list ahead of the team’s win 12-3 Above colorado rockies On Monday, a statement said he would return “during the second half of the season.” In the same move, the Dodgers recalled the left-hander jake eder27, from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
A veteran right-hander in his first season with the club, Díaz has four saves and 10 strikeouts with a 10.50 ERA. On Sunday, in a loss to the Rockies at Coors Field, the veteran gave up three runs without recording an out.
“Obviously, we all saw stuff last night and it set off alarm bells,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Diaz’s performance on Sunday. “After the game, he talked with our training staff, and realized he had some elbow issues. … We just wanted to stay active, and felt it would be wise for him to get an MRI.”
During his pregame media availability at Coors Field on Monday, Roberts said Diaz’s imaging showed no ligament damage and the injury is limited to the loose body. The surgery will take place at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles.
“It was the first time he felt it,” Roberts said of the discomfort. “Not to single it out, but I had the same surgery at the end of my career. … So, I can really understand what he’s going through. … It’s unfortunate.”
Diaz spent the last seven years together New York MetsCollected 144 saves while becoming a fan favorite at Citi Field. “I think this is a really good team,” Diaz said after getting his first save as a Dodger last month. “I think we have a lot of good players here. I think if everybody stays healthy, this team has a chance to win a three-peat. Let’s just hope everybody stays healthy and keeps winning baseball games.”
Roberts also told reporters in the start without Diaz that the Dodgers would probably use a committee approach in the ninth inning.
“I feel really comfortable with a handful of guys I think can finish these games for us,” he said. “So, right now, I won’t name any close ones.”
