Skydiver rescued after crashing into Virginia Tech scoreboard

Blacksburg, Virginia — A skydiver crashed into the scoreboard of First Lane Stadium Virginia TechThe first spring football game under new coach James Franklin on Saturday.

Virginia Tech officials said on Twitter that the skydiver “recovered safely and is currently stable” following rescue efforts. The incident caused the start of the spring game to be delayed by more than an hour.

The skydiver’s name was not released.

“Our primary focus is their well-being,” Virginia Tech officials said in a statement. “We sincerely appreciate the first responders, event staff and medical personnel for their quick, coordinated and professional response.”

Virginia Tech later released a statement on x Saying that the “quick action” of first responders “returned today’s parachutist safely to the ground without injury.”

Video footage shows the skydiver’s parachute landing between the “C” and “H” on the Virginia Tech letters at the top of the scoreboard.

The skydiver dropped a giant American flag and a small parachute into the stand, hanging there for about 20 minutes before first responders rescued him.

The Blacksburg Fire Department did not immediately respond to a voicemail seeking details on the incident.
