New York Giants and star defensive tackle dexter lawrence ii Negotiations over a new contract extension have reached an impasse, sources told NFL Network Tuesday night.
The Giants have engaged with teams on a potential trade of Lawrence, which will now continue ahead of next week’s NFL Draft.
News of the standoff between the two sides came the same day Giants general manager Joe Schoen described talks between the team and Lawrence’s agent as “productive.”
“We’ve had good conversations with their representatives over the last five or six days,” Schoen said, beginning his annual predraft news conference with an update on the situation. “coach [John Harbaugh], [senior vice president of football operations and strategy] dawn [Aponte]I, I, we are all in communication, trying to find some solution.
“I’ll reiterate what coach said last week: We want Dexter to be here, and at some point we’ll reach a solution here, whatever it is. We’ll see. But the conversations have been really good, they’ve been productive and we’ll see what happens here moving forward.”
Lawrence’s contract is currently out of guaranteed money, and his $20 million salary ranks him 10th among interior defensive linemen this season. He requested a trade and did not appear for the start of the Giants’ first offseason workout program under Harbaugh.
“I’ll always answer the phone,” Shawn said Tuesday about potential offers for Lawrence. “So if a team calls – that coach probably won’t have an impact [Harbaugh] Said last week that everyone is tradeable – but, no, that’s my job as general manager. If teams call, you keep in mind that it’s a case-by-case basis and what the compensation might be. It’s my job to consider what it looks like, what the compensation looks like, who the players are, how it impacts the roster and then try to make the best decision from that.”
It will be difficult for the Giants to make a move given the state of their roster. They are currently thin at the defensive tackle position and only have two top-100 picks in this year’s draft.
Schoen said the trade request did not affect the way the team approached the draft. The Giants have the fifth selection in the first round and are not expected to take a defensive tackle at that spot. The 37th pick is their only other selection in the first two days.
“We will continue our process,” Schoen said. “The scouts went [Monday]So they have been here for about 14 days and, you know, now we are finalizing the board.
“But it really has no impact on how we proceed with the draft.”
