MILWAUKEE – In an age of hyperinflation, it’s hard to keep the totals separate now, but what brewers starter Jakub Misiorowski And what his bullpen teammates did on Opening Day would be an eye-opener in any era.
After allowing a leadoff homer. white sox‘S Chase Meadroth – The first Opening Day leadoff homer in Chicago’s long history – Misierowski and four Milwaukee relievers buried the Chicago Cubs in an avalanche of 20 strikeouts, leading 14-2 Brewers loss On Thursday.
By the time Misiorowski left after five innings, that home run was the only figure he had allowed and he had 11 strikeouts – three more than any Brewers pitcher before him on Opening Day.
Looks like Homer didn’t rattle him.
“The early days are weird,” Misiorowski said. “There’s a lot of stuff going on, the huge flag through the outfield. So it’s cool to see, but there’s a lot of emotions, trying to figure it out. Giving up a home run sucks, but the guy got it. So, oh, OK, let’s move on.”
Misiorowski’s electric, triple-digit fastball put him on the map when he reached the major leagues last season, earning so much praise that he was selected to the National League All-Star team despite having just five career starts under his belt. He wasn’t hitting over 100 mph on Opening Day – it’s too early in the season for that – but his stuff was good enough to induce 24 swing-and-misses by Chicago hitters.
“a lot of [vertical],” Misiorowski said. “It was working today.”
But with Misiorowski gone, the game was largely out of control. Aaron Ashby, grant anderson, DL Hall And jake woodford The strikeouts kept coming – nine more in the last four innings. Hall and Woodford both shut out the team in their lone frames.
When Woodford struck out a Chicago pinch hitter derek hill To wrap it up, it gave the Brewers a nice, Round 20. This set a new franchise mark and set the MLB record for most team strikeouts in a nine-inning game. This is the first time that a team has made so many records in nine innings on the opening day.
Not a bad start. The strikeouts came so fast and furious that most of the media gathered during the game had no idea the Brewers had hit such a high mark. Manager Pat Murphy then guessed what the MLB record was after asking him.
“How I don’t see it as historical [Misiorowski] Throwed the ball,” Murphy said. “I think he did some really good things, and he matured, which is what we’re hoping for. “I think that’s something to be excited about.”
According to ESPN Research, ten teams have struck out 20 batters in a nine-inning game. The last to do so were the Mets, who did so on September 18, 2022, against Pittsburgh.
