College baseball Week 5: Top 25 rankings, top moments and what to watch

What a start to conference play! The SEC started fast and furious, with Arkansas winning its home series against Mississippi State in Fayetteville and Texas ultimately losing its first game of the season. And things continued to get worse for LSU as the Tigers lost two games on the road to Vanderbilt.

In the ACC, Clemson lost its home series to Georgia Tech, and Wake Forest had a tough week overall, losing all four of its games – one to Coastal Carolina and three to Florida State. The series sweep for FSU helped the Seminoles jump nine spots in this week’s rankings.

Elsewhere in the top 25, UCLA holds steady at No. 1, and the biggest jump of the week is crosstown rival USC, which moved up 12 spots. Virginia’s rise also continues, with the Cavaliers finally breaking into the top 10.

Newcomers to this week’s rankings include West Virginia at No. 20, Oregon at 21st and Louisiana at 25, with TCU, UTSA and LSU — yes, the Tigers are officially unranked — dropping out.

Here are the complete Top 25 rankings as of March 16, along with our favorite moments and what we’re looking forward to in the week ahead.

top moment

Can we file late nominations for Oscars? Because this end of Georgia-Tennessee was everything you wanted to see. A dramatic bat flip after a flagged home run for the Vols! But then enter Cole Johnson! And Johnson clearly wasn’t going to let this ball fly past him.

And it’s worth taking a closer look at that premature celebration.

Roch Cholowski and the Bruins have squared off this season, and Cholowski got home run No. 10 this weekend.

player to watch

Quinton Coates, 1B, Cincinnati

While Cincinnati has been in the middle of the pack this season – the Bearcats are 15-6 and lost their first conference series to BYU – Coates has been dominant. The sophomore has hit 14 home runs and has a .418 batting average with 35 RBI. The way he is hitting, the Big 12 will definitely keep an eye on him.

series worth watching

No. 10 NC State and No. 11 Florida State

Game 1: Friday 6 p.m. (ACC Network Extra)
Game 2: Saturday 2 p.m. (ACC Network Extra)
Game 3: Sunday at 1 p.m. (ACC Network Extra)

There are plenty of top-ranked SEC matchups this weekend, like Texas at Auburn, but we’re narrowing down the ACC with NC State taking on Florida State with a trip to Tallahassee. NC State had a bit of an up-and-down 2-2 week, losing games to Elon and Boston College, but bounced back to eventually take the series against BC. Florida State, meanwhile, edged out 12th-ranked Wake Forest, even though it had lost a game to Florida earlier in the week. Can the Wolfpack bounce back on the road? Or have the Seminoles got their way?
