indianapolis-the Chicago Bears Linebacker provided tremaine edmonds A source confirmed to ESPN that permission to seek a trade.
Edmunds, 27, is entering the final season of a four-year, $72 million contract he signed with the Bears as a free agent in 2023. His contract has a base salary of $13.9 million for 2026 with a $1 million roster bonus payable on the fifth day of the league year. His cap hit is $17.9 million.
If Edmunds doesn’t find a trade partner, he’s in line to become a cap casualty. Releasing Edmunds would create $15 million in salary cap space for Chicago.
“There’s some guys we’ve got to make decisions about,” Bears general manager Ryan Poles said when asked about Edmunds’ future on Tuesday.
“If it’s a trade, a release, there are a lot of different options … or some options we can go on to make some room. But like I said before, it’s a unique situation where we’ve put our roster in a position where we have a lot of talented players, a lot of guys getting paid well, and that creates some constraints at the cap. So, we have to make some tough decisions. And, you know, like I said, when we win games, So you build these relationships. People who are leaders, or people who were captains, mean a lot to our organization but when you’re put in a corner…”
Edmunds led the Bears with 112 tackles last season, including nine passes defensed, four interceptions, one sack and one fumble recovery, despite missing four games due to a groin injury. He also made 13 tackles in Chicago’s two playoff games.

The news that the Bears were allowing Edmunds to seek a trade was first reported by the Chicago Tribune.
