TWIN LAKES, Iowa — A community college bus carrying the school’s baseball team crashed and overturned in a ditch in rural Iowa on Wednesday, killing one person and injuring all 32 others on board, authorities said.
The early morning crash involved an Iowa Lakes Community College bus and no other vehicles, the Iowa State Patrol said in a statement. It happened on a highway near Twin Lakes, about 110 miles northwest of Des Moines.
Three people were transported to trauma hospitals in Des Moines, said Bruce Musgrave, director of Calhoun County Emergency Services. Others were taken by ambulance to four area hospitals.
The Iowa Lakes baseball team (1-3) was scheduled to play games Thursday at North Arkansas College, but all four have been canceled. The school is a member of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference, which said it was “saddened to learn of the bus accident.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the student-athletes, coaches, staff, families and the entire Iowa Lakes community during this incredibly difficult time,” the conference said in a statement.
It was not clear why the bus crashed. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating.
