BYU Coach Kevin Young shared his frustration over the anti-Mormon chants that could be heard from the Oklahoma State student section during the No. 16 Cougars’ game. 99-92 upset damage to Cowboy On Wednesday night.
“I heard some ‘F the Mormons’ chants by the student section tonight,” Young said in his postgame news conference. “This was a big win for Oklahoma State University. I think their fans should be proud, but it would be great to be guaranteed some class.
“I have four young kids at home, I’m a Mormon, and when I go home, they ask me about it, the same way they asked me about it last year in Arizona.”
The Big 12 said in a statement Thursday that it is “aware of the reports of inappropriate chants and are investigating.”
“The conference has zero tolerance for behavior of this nature and this matter will be addressed in accordance with Big 12 sportsmanship policies,” the league said.
This is at least the fourth time in the past year that a chant derogatory toward Mormons has been used during a BYU men’s basketball or football game, and it has also happened at other games in the past few years.
Arizona apologized For the chant during last season’s loss to BYU in Tucson, when the same chant was heard colorado And cincinnati Fans during the 2025 soccer games. All three schools apologized for the related incidents, and the Big 12 fined the Buffaloes’ program $50,000 and issued a public reprimand.
“There’s too much hate in the world to say things like that,” Young said. “There are enough problems in our world without people following their religion and beliefs. … This stuff is unfair … and it’s just disappointing.”
BYU Star AJ DiBantsa Had 36 points and 7 rebounds in loss to Oklahoma State, led Anthony RoySeason high of 30 points. It was the Cougars’ third consecutive loss.
After the win, Oklahoma State fans stormed the court.
