Anthony Joshua’s driver charged by Nigerian police after fatal crash

The driver of the car involved in the accident, Anthony Joshua, was injured killed two people Nigerian police said he has been charged with careless and dangerous driving.

Adeniyi Mobalaji Kayode, 46, was driving a Lexus SUV on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when he collided with a parked truck. Joshua and the driver suffered minor injuries in the accident, while two members of the British-Nigerian boxer’s training team, Sina Ghaemi and Lateef Ayodele, died.

The Ogun State Police Command issued a statement on Friday saying the driver was arraigned at the Sagamu Magistrate Court on Friday.

A police spokesman told AFP that Kayode was charged with “reckless” and “dangerous driving causing death”, driving without a valid driver’s license and “driving without due care and attention, causing bodily harm and damage to property”.

He said he was granted five million naira bail ($3,500) but would remain in custody until he met the bail conditions.

Kayode is due to appear in court on January 20.

Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach Ghaemi and trainer Ayodele were both pronounced dead at the scene. Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos on Wednesday to pay their last respects.

Joshua, who was born in Watford, has family roots in Sagamu – a town in Ogun State near the crash site.

The boxer was spending time in Nigeria following his recent win over Jake Paul on December 19.
