Arlington, Texas — dallas cowboys Owner and general manager Jerry Jones is disappointed with how the season went for his team.
The Cowboys’ playoff chances ended Saturday night, when philadelphia eagles Green Washington CommandersDallas’ lost 34-17 till los angeles chargers Sunday guaranteed the Cowboys would have consecutive non-winning records. If they lose one of their final two games, they will have the record for losing records in consecutive years for the first time since finishing 5–11 three times in a row from 2000 to 2002.
“We didn’t really get everything done,” Jones said. “And the fact that we’re not in the playoffs speaks for you.”
The Cowboys’ Super Bowl drought reaches 30 years. Every NFC team except the Cowboys has made the conference championship game during that span. Since winning Super Bowl XXX, the Cowboys have made the playoffs 13 times and have never advanced beyond the divisional round.
“I will acknowledge that Cowboys management played a role, a big role,” Jones said.
But Jones doesn’t believe the Cowboys are that far away from making an extended postseason run.
“As far as next year, I think we have a team that has a great future,” Jones said. “Starting with the offense, starting with where we stand here tonight. And I think we have a solid defense there as well.
“And so, I think when we do things that are directed toward making us better, period, no matter who we do it with, as soon as we do those things, we’re starting to [from a] Really nice place. And I love what we’ve done with our hats. We are able to spend money when needed. And we will be able to draft with the options we choose. So, I can give you all kinds of reasons why we might change what we’re doing here tonight.”
The Cowboys have the first 4,000-yard passer (dak prescott), 1,000-yard running back (javonte williams) and two 1,000-yard receivers (cd lamb, george pickens) for only the second time in franchise history. The second time this happened in 2019, with Prescott, ezekiel elliottAmari Cooper and Michael GallupAnd the Cowboys also missed the playoffs.
Jones feels good about the interior of his defensive line with the tackles quinnan williamsWho did not play against the Chargers due to a neck problem, kenny clarke And Osa OdighizuvaJones sees hope at linebacker demarvian overshonwho suffered an injury in the first half on Sunday, and rookie edge rusher Donovan Ezeiruacu,
The future of defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus will be discussed when the season ends. Jones said the Cowboys would not make a coordinator change with two games left in the regular season.
Eberflus visited the coaches’ booth for the first time Sunday, and the impact was minimal. The Cowboys allowed points on the Chargers’ first four drives. Justin Herbert Entered this season as the NFL’s most sacked quarterback, and he was not sacked on Sunday.
Jones said the team will evaluate the entire season and see what options are available.
“Now it’s not unusual this time of year to evaluate your entire coaching staff,” Jones said. “And obviously, the target is on that because of our statistical and actual play on the defensive side of the ball. But it goes with it. This is the life that guys have chosen, and they know you’re under the gun in almost every game, much less for an entire season as a coach. It goes with the profession.”
Jones had high praise for first-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer
Jones said, “You’re getting to utilize a lot of his breadth of experience, Brian, where he’s grown up, the staff he’s been on. And we’re utilizing a lot of that.” “I’m really pleased with the work Brian has done to get us to where we are today.”
Cowboys season ends the first weekend in January. The wait for the Super Bowl continues, but that hasn’t diminished Jones’ confidence.
“We’ve got a team that goes to that Super Bowl every year,” Jones said. “Two who meet to reach them [conference] game. I’m looking forward to getting back to that championship game next year and maybe beyond that. And then, I’ll top the list with how long it’s been since you’ve been there. And that’s how you do it. Right at the top.
“And it will all be over.”
