Trump says the GOP 'broke' Schumer

President Trump criticized Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.)’s handling of the government shutdown in an interview on Monday, saying Republicans bested him in the process.

“I think they made a mistake by going too far,” Trump told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham on The Ingraham Angle. “He thought he could break the Republicans and the Republicans broke him.”

The President said, “I have never seen a politician change so much.” “He was a very talented person. He has lost his talent.”

Schumer faces opposition from Democrats across the board for Sunday’s procedural vote that would begin the process of reopening the government. Critics of the minority leader argue that he was unable to keep the Democratic caucus together, resulting in seven Democrats, including Senator Angus King (I-Maine), joining Republicans in voting to reopen the government without any assurances of increasing Obamacare subsidies.

The minority leader voted against the measure, specifically citing subsidies that expire at the end of this year.

Progressive groups MoveOn and the Campaign for Progressive Change have also called on Schumer to step down from his position as minority leader.
