A new poll shows that voters who would have liked former Vice President Harris to be president were not necessarily the ones who could name the current leader of the Democratic Party.
Politico’s latest surveyThe survey, conducted by London-based consultancy Public First, found that Harris voters could not find a consensus around any Democratic Party leader in the days ahead of the 2025 elections. Of those asked, 21 percent said they “don’t know.”
At second place, 16 percent people said that Harris is the leader of the party. More than 10 percent of respondents said “none.”
About 7 percent of respondents chose Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and former President Obama.

Only less than 2 percent of respondents named former 2016 and 2020 presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who last year said he expected finally retire of his current tenure As Democrat leader.
The only politician elected by more than 1 percent of the population was Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.). Among New York Democrats, less than 1 percent of voters said they viewed former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D), former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani (D) and Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) as party leaders.
Democratic strategist Lauren Harper Pope told POLITICO that the party is divided “Factionally and ideologically,” and agreed with voters who said they did not know who the party leader was.
Harper Pope said, “This is where we are, guys.”
However, the same survey found that respondents know who leads the Republican Party. Of those surveyed, 81.4 percent said President Trump leads the GOP, followed by 5.7 percent who said they “don’t know.” Behind him are Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Vice President Vance at 3 percent and 2 percent, respectively.
The Politico poll was conducted October 18–21 and reached 2,051 respondents. The margin of error is 2.2 percentage points.
