Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) said Thursday that the future of the Republican Party’s leadership is unclear after President Trump leaves the White House.
“You’re starting to see this civil war emerge within the GOP,” Kinzinger said during an appearance on CNN’s “AC360.”
He said, “People ask me all the time what will happen when Donald Trump is no longer in the picture, who is the heir apparent to MAGA? And the answer is, no one knows.”
Kinzinger railed against white nationalist Nick Fuentes and urged the party to move away from endorsing his stances on issues, as the controversy over his interview with Tucker Carlson has divided the conservative base.
“I think what you’re starting to see is an understanding that Donald Trump really won’t run again. He can’t. He’s accepting it. So you’re seeing these factions now rising up and fighting for it,” he told anchor Anderson Cooper.
“This is a decision that Republicans, broadly speaking, will have to make. Are you going to be a Reagan-esque party, which I don’t think they will. Are you going to allow these Nick Fuentes types to come in? I hope they won’t allow it, but it’s a decision they’ll have to make,” Kinzinger said.
He said that once Trump leaves office, voters will see “absolutely” infighting.
Vice President Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have both been labeled early Republican contenders for the 2028 presidential election.
