Dowdle celebrated his third quarter touchdown with two pelvic thrusts as several teammates stood around him in the end zone, alluding to the 2013 “Key and Peele” comedy sketch in which two thrusts were acceptable but three crossed the line and would warrant a flag. Dowdle’s celebration resulted in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty which caused the Panthers to miss the extra point kick.
Dowdle wrote on X That they started a GoFundMe. “After a lot of thought I’ve launched a GoFundMe for my fine. Key said I got three pumps but I guess the NFL doesn’t agree with that,” he wrote in a separate post.
“In fact, 100% of the money raised through this fundraiser will go to the 56-Children Home Society of North Carolina,” he said. “The Children’s Home Society promotes every child’s right to a permanent, safe, and loving family. They specialize in education and prevention programs, family preservation, and adoption and foster care. Let’s raise some money.”
After Dowdle’s celebration was penalized, actor and comedian Keegan-Michael Key, who wrote sketches for Comedy Central, posted a video on Instagram later Sunday lamenting Dowdle being penalized despite only scoring two tries.
“Rico. Man, you got robbed. You only did two pumps,” Key said. “I’m sorry, man. Now I have to write a new sketch.”
According to one source, Dowdle’s associates were not fined.
