
New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) said Monday that she thought the “tax the rich” slogan at Sunday’s rally for New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani was “Let’s go Bills,” instead referencing the NFL team Buffalo Bills.
“Given the reception you got last night at Zoharan’s rally, where people were chanting, ‘Tax the rich, tax the rich,’ are you going to hold the line on raising taxes, even if it means losing support or getting a primary challenge?” a reporter asked Hochul in a clip posted on social platform x monday,
Hochul responded, “I couldn’t hear what they were chanting. I thought they were saying, ‘Let’s go Bills’.” “I wasn’t – I wasn’t sure – when you were there – I heard some noise. I heard a lot of cheering. But afterward, it became clear to me that there’s a – I know there’s a passion for him.”
“I went there as a leader of the Democratic Party, whose job it is to rally and unite behind the Democratic candidate. I love the energy there,” she said.
As Hochul began speaking at Mamdani’s rally on Sunday, chants of “tax the rich” could be clearly heard.
Hochul formally endorsed Mamdani in September, announcing his endorsement in a New York Times op-ed.
“The question of who will be the next mayor is one I take very seriously and have given it a lot of thought,” Hochul said. said in his times Piece. “Tonight I’m supporting Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani.”
Mamdani surprised political observers by winning the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City in June over political veteran and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. The young democratic socialist now faces Cuomo, who is running as an independent, in the general election.
