Denver– dallas cowboys Owner and general manager Jerry Jones was not happy with Sunday’s result, a lost 44-24 till denver broncosBut the result won’t dictate how he looks to improve the defense ahead of next week’s trade deadline.
“If I saw an offer to help this team, no matter what the score was today, I would look at it on the merits of helping the team,” Jones said. “I will look more fully at the merits of both over the next week or so [and the longer term]”No, today will not impact the decision to trade any players.”
According to multiple sources, the Cowboys have gauged interest from teams in potential targets, but have not been able to find a middle ground to agree on a trade.
And Jones doesn’t view the Cowboys’ defense as a player from being competitive.
On Sunday, the Cowboys gave up their most points in a game since losing 47-9 detroit lions In Week 5 last year. It was the second time this season they allowed more than 40 points. It was the fourth time he allowed over 400 yards (426). It was the fourth time an opponent had at least 25 first downs, and the second time the Cowboys allowed four touchdown passes.
The Broncos had 179 yards rushing, an average of 6.4 yards per carry. It was the fifth time the Cowboys allowed more than 6.2 YPC and the fifth time they gave up more than 144 rushing yards.
“I don’t know what’s realistic,” Jones said. “Could there be a better player – if we haven’t paid too big a price to have a better player on defense to possibly help? I’m not trying to be cheesy, but that’s why you’d go get him because you think you can help your defense. Are we a player away on defense? I think we’re not. I think we’re a lot better away than that, but in my mind, we’re doing better on defense than he is.”
Coach Brian Schottenheimer wasn’t putting the onus of the loss on the defense.
“When you look at it, I wouldn’t just start with the defense,” he said. “I don’t think any of us coached enough and played well enough.”
Schottenheimer also didn’t want to speculate on whether the defense needed help.
“At the end of the day, I think we have a lot of good players,” Schottenheimer said. “I think we didn’t play well tonight.”
The defense entered Sunday ranked 32nd in yards per game and 30th in points per game. The Cowboys have given up 250 points, the third-most in team history through the first eight games of a season. In 1960, the franchise’s first year, the Cowboys scored 272 points in the first eight games and finished 0–11–1. In 2020, the Cowboys scored 26–6 while finishing 6–10.

“I don’t see any lack of effort,” Jones said. “I see people who can be more confident, more determined in their execution.”

quarterback dak prescott When asked if the Cowboys needed such a trade to start the season strong.
“I’m confident and I like the guys we have,” Prescott said. “To be honest, I do. And this is not just a political answer. You see, some of these games we have won and, to be honest, we have even tied [against Green Bay] And we’ve lost some games…our roster is fine. Could it be better? It is your job to write about it and decide.
“I have confidence in those guys. We’ve got to be better at everything we do. It takes an opportunity to be traded and it’s taken away from somebody else, and so I just tell the guys in the locker room … forget the trade. And do it. OK? Like stop that thing whether it’s offense, whether it’s defense, whatever position group you guys are pointing at, go ahead and stop the conversation.”
