Americans view the Republican Party as the party more capable of protecting America and keeping America prosperous, but fewer people hold this view than last year. The Gallup poll was released Tuesday.
The poll found that 48 percent of Americans believe the GOP is more likely to keep the country safe, while 41 percent believe the Democrats can do the same. However, the GOP lead has declined from 57 percent in 2022 and 2023, to 54 percent in 2024.
Very few Americans believe Republicans are likely to keep the country prosperous. Gallup’s previous poll, conducted in September 2024, showed that 50 percent of Americans thought they were better at keeping the country prosperous. A year later it declined, to 43 percent believing the GOP keeps the country prosperous, while 47 percent believe the Democrats are better at national prosperity.
In terms of which party respondents think can handle the country’s most important problems, Democrats have only a two-point lead, at 40 percent compared to Republicans’ 38 percent. This lead for Democrats “contrasts with Republicans’ lead of three to 11 points during Biden’s presidency,” the pollsters said.
Both parties received low overall favorability, with 40 percent favoring Republicans and 37 percent favoring Democrats.
“Yet, while Republicans have lost ground this year on the key issues of maintaining prosperity and national security, Democrats have made no similar gains,” the pollsters said. “Concerningly, Americans are broadly dissatisfied with both major parties, and not even half of the public views either in a favorable light.”
Gallup’s poll showed overwhelming unpopularity toward both parties and President Trump compared to other polls.Latest Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that 50 percent of respondents blamed congressional Republicans for the government shutdown, while 47 percent blamed Democrats. The same poll showed that President Trump has 42 percent approval, compared to 40 percent last month.
The Gallup survey was conducted from September 2 to 16 and included 1,000 respondents. The margin of error is four percentage points.
