President Trump said on Sunday that he would support converting the names of Washington commanders back to Redskins, but suggested if the team should start winning more, he could reach the board with the current name.
In a Gagel with reporters, Trump was asked if the team would think the team should change the name in Redskins, which was demolished in 2020 in view of protests in the opposition.
Trump told the reporter, “You want me to make a controversial statement?”
“I wouldn’t change the name,” he continued. “This is not just one, it is not the same ring for me.”
“But you know, everything can be good by winning. So if they win, the commanders suddenly feel good, but I would not have changed the name,” the President said.
In July 2020, the team announced that it was retiring Redskins and logo after internal reviews. For nearly two years, the football team was known as the “Washington Football Team”, and in February 2022, the team rebrands as commanders.
The name has been controversial with many fans, with some calls back to it. In April, Washington Post Pols found that most of the fans were not happy with the name.
However, the owner of the commanders Josh Harris reduced the probability in February.
“I think it has now been embraced by our team, by our culture, by our coaching staff. So we are going with it,” he said at a press conference.
