Former LA schools chief launches challenge to Karen Bass

Former Los Angeles Unified School District superintendent Austin Buettner has launched a challenge against the city’s current mayor, Karen Bass.

Buettner, who is contesting as a Democrat, launched the social platform Monday mornings.

Buettner’s campaign follows recent turmoil in Los Angeles over President Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to the city, immigration policy and deadly wildfires earlier this year.

“I voted for Karen Bass last time. We had expectations, but now she also recognizes that we need change across the city. I agree, Los Angeles needs change. These are no ordinary times and I’m no ordinary candidate,” Buettner said in a video posted on YouTube on Monday.

During an interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett, Bass discussed the president’s comments at a large gathering of the nation’s top generals and admirals.

“The statements made to the military yesterday, admitting that we are going to experiment with our cities and use our cities as training grounds for war, mean that the President of the United States wants to turn the American military against the American people,” Bass said.
