But Rudiger and Alaba could both be on the move in 2026, while there are some doubts about Asensio after some high-profile mistakes this year. That means a centre-back will be on Madrid’s list next summer to complete the first-team squad, and one option would be to rely on their usual, successful formula: bringing in a top-quality player on a free transfer, as they did with Alaba, Rudiger, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kylian Mbappe.
