Austin (KXAN) – Texas alternative country artist Charlie Crockett has never been one to swim with the tide. The self-proclaimed maverick reminded his fans of this once again on social media this week.
Crockett, a native Texan from San Benito who is famous for his distinctly Americana music, took to social media this week to remind people of his roots and share his thoughts on changing the name from “Gulf of Mexico” to “America’s Gulf.”
“I was born in the Gulf of Mexico. I wouldn’t know it by any other name.” The post said“Any true Texan knows that our Mexican American brothers and sisters hold our economy in every industry. I am proud to be born in the Rio Grande Valley where the population is over 90 percent Latino.”
Crockett was, of course, referencing President Trump. executive Order To change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to “America’s Gulf”. That order prompted countless conversations and debates about whether Trump should or even could rename the water body.
Crockett’s post concluded, “If those boys in Washington DC want to rename regions of this country, they might as well start with New England. Because it’s not new and it’s not England.”
This is not the first time the singer has spoken about controversial topics online.
In August, Crockett wrote a long caption In a social media post about feedback Fellow Texas artist Beyoncé received the award earlier this year for delving into the country music genre with her album “Cowboy Carter,” and winning the prestigious country music award for it.
“Hey country people. @beyonce is not the source of your discontent. This was 25 years of brother country,” Crockett said at the beginning of the post. Later in the caption, he wrote, “I don’t need to put down a black woman to push my music. It’s shameful to the idea of America and I get no respect for it.”
