MLB approves robot umpires for 2026 as part of challenge system

New York – Robot umpire is being called to large leagues in the next season.

The 11-Man Competition Committee of Major League baseball approved the use of automatic ball/strike system in Major League in 2026 on Tuesday.

The human plate umpire will still call balls and strikes, but teams can challenge two calls per game and make additional appeal in additional innings. The challenges should be done by a pitcher, catcher or batsman – their helmet or cap should be indicated by tapping – and a team retains its challenge when successful. The review will be shown as digital graphics on the outfield videoboard.

Lobot is likely to cut on ejections by adding UMPS. MLB stated that 61.5% ejections between players, managers and coaches last year were related to balls and attacks, as 60.3% in this season through Sunday. The data includes ejections for derogatory comments, throwing equipment opposing calls and improper conduct.

According to umpscorecards, large league umpires say about 94% of the pitches correctly.

ABS, which uses Hawk-I cameras, has been tested in a minor league since 2019. Independent Atlantic League tested the system in its 2019 all-star game and MLB established technology for the year, which is the Arizona Fall League of the top possibilities. The ABS was tried in eight out of the nine ballparks of the Low-A Southeast League in 2021, then moved to Triple-A in 2022.

At the beginning of the 2023 season in Triple-A, half the games used robots for ball/strike calls and in half were the decisions to make a human subject to the appeal by teams for ABS.

MLB converted Triple-A into an all-challenge system on 26 June 2024, then used the challenge system this year at 13 spring training Ballpark this year, hosting 19 teams for a total of 288 exhibition games. Teams won their ball/strike challenges (617 out of 1,182) challenges 52.2% of the challenges.

In Triple-A this season, average challenges per game increased from 3.9 to 4.2 through Sunday and the success rate fell from 50.6% to 49.5%. This year, 53.7% of the challenges were successful and crimes were committed in 45%.

In the first Test in the Big League All-Star Game, the plate was successful in July 4 of the five challenges of umpire Dan Eyasogna’s call.

In Triple-A teams do not get additional challenges in additional innings. The proposal approved on Tuesday included a provision, which gives the teams an additional challenge, if they do not have challenges.

MLB has experimented with various shapes and interpretations of strike zone with ABS, with three dimensions. Currently, it completely tells us that the ball crosses the middle point of the plate, which is 8.5 inches from the front and back. The top batsman of the strike zone is 53.5% of height and 27% below.

This will change the first major rule of MLB Wide adjustment in 2024They included a pitch watch, prohibition on defensive innings, pickoff efforts and large bases such as pitches.

The challenge system introduces ABS without eliminating pitch framing, a subtle art where catches use their body and gloves to try to make borderline pitches look like a strike. Framing has become a significant skill for large league cators, and was worried that the fully developed ABS would disrespect some strong defensive cators. It is not that everyone loves it.

Former manager Bobby Valentine said, “The idea that people are paid to cheat, to steal the strike, to move a pitch, which does not have a strike in the zone to fool and make it.”

Bocha, manager of Texas, a large league of 1978–87, maintained the old school umpire such as Bruce Forning and Billy Williams, never accepted pitch framing. He said that he must have told him: “If you do this again, you will never get a strike.” I am cutting some words. ,
