WWE Crown Jewel takeaways: Cena, Styles pass the torch to Rollins, Rhodes

John Cena and AJ Styles stole the show at WWE’s Crown Jewel in Perth, Australia with a love letter to professional wrestling. The match between two legends – Cena later this year and Styles in 2026 – featured impressive tributes to past opponents and WWE legends. Cena also won his 100th WWE Premium Live Event (PLE) match. Only The Undertaker has more, with 107, a record we’ll have to wait a while to see broken.

Also on the card, Seth Rollins finally got the recognition and vindication he was seeking against Cody Rhodes. Bronson Reed also scored a historic victory over Roman Reigns, which many did not see coming. And the Australian wrestlers understood the task.

John Cena uses the Tombstone to pin AJ Styles at WWE: Crown Jewel

John Cena paid tribute to The Undertaker by giving AJ Styles a Tombstone, then hit an Attitude Adjustment to get the win at WWE: Crown Jewel.

The match between John Cena and AJ Styles may rank as the best match of Cena’s retirement tour – filled with tributes. It began with Cena giving ring announcer Alicia Taylor a paper with a special introduction that included a reference to Total Nonstop Action Wrestling and the crowd at Bullet Club chanting “Holy s—” and “This is amazing” before the match even began. The match began with some catch-as-catch-can action, with several lockups and sportsmanship displayed, with both wrestlers clearly respecting each other.

Tributes to past opponents continued for Cena, including a Skull Crushing Finale (The Miz), an Accolade (Rusev) and even the Walls of Jericho (Chris Jericho). Styles wore his old TNA ring gear for the match. Cena hit a DDT with Styles’ legs on the ropes, followed by an RKO, a Randy Orton Special (followed by a missed punt). We also checked out About 619 and Sweet Chin Music (from Styles). However, the loudest applause of the tribute was when Cena gave Sister Abigail a kiss on the forehead, to the delight of the crowd, who then took out her phone’s flashlight in an appropriate firefly scene.

Cena pinned Styles after the Tombstone at the Attitude Adjustment, a great “follow that” kind of match and a beautiful love letter to professional wrestling.

Now it’s Rhodes and Rollins’ turn

Seth Rollins used a Rolex watch to get his first career win over Cody Rhodes

Seth Rollins uses a Rolex watch gifted to him by Cody Rhodes to defeat Rhodes for the first time in his career.

It was poetic that on the same card we saw Cena vs. Styles, we also got Cody Rhodes vs. Seth Rollins, which was a showcase between the present and future of the industry for years to come.

Rollins defeated Rhodes by first hitting him with a Rolex watch gifted to him by Rhodes, followed by a stomp off the top rope. Rollins ultimately got the victory over Rhodes and claimed the Men’s Crown Jewel Championship in the process.

After weeks of pressuring Rollins for a win, perhaps we’ll now hear Paul Heyman say that this was all a test to get Rollins out of his mind and find a way to unlock his true potential.

Anyway, this was a great match between Cena vs Styles. We often talk about the “passing of the torch” from one wrestler to another in a match (like Cena to Rhodes at SummerSlam), but in a way, through their match, Cena and Styles passed the torch to Rollins and Rhodes.

Jey Uso’s accidental spear of Roman Reigns leads to Bronson Reed’s victory in Australian Street Fight

Jey Uso accidentally speared Roman Reigns through a table, causing Bronson Reed to get the pin in an Australian Street Fight at WWE: Crown Jewel.

We learned that Australian street fights involve cricket bats, rugby balls and all-out ground fighting. Reigns dominated the first several minutes of the match, attempting to get revenge on Bronson Reed, until Reed turned the tide, with the crowd standing solidly against his fellow countryman. Braun Breaker essentially came to Reed’s aid, spearing Reigns on the outside. The Usos came to Reigns’ aid, but it turned into disaster as Jey Uso accidentally speared Reigns through a table, causing a tsunami and giving Reed the victory. Reed joins Cody Rhodes as the second WWE Superstar to pin Reigns in the last as many years. Reed also won in his home country, which is another rare feat (in WWE folklore). It must have felt extra pleasing for Reid, who was injured last year and could not compete in the 2024 Elimination Chamber in Perth.

At the end of the match, Reigns told The Usos, “I don’t want to see all of you until Christmas.” The funny thing is, I say the exact same thing to my entire family at Thanksgiving.

Australian team shines in Perth. Rhea Ripley and Iyo Sky defeated the Kabuki Warriors as the crowd showered Ripley with love. Bronson Reed scores a historic victory. Grayson Waller was in the red all week. Probably the best hometown talent showcase ever in WWE.
