“In a situation when the puck is intentionally or accidentally displaced by the defending player before it crosses the goal line between the normal positions of the goal posts, the referee may award a goal. To award a goal in this situation, the goal posts must be displaced by the actions of the defending player, the attacking player must have an imminent scoring opportunity before the goal posts are displaced, and it must be determined that the puck must have entered the net between the normal positions of the goal posts. Stamkos said he believed Johansson’s goal-scoring shot was only possible due to the net coming out of its bind.
“I understand the net was closed. I don’t think our goaltender had any intention of knocking it down – it came up twice today. From our vantage point, we thought the puck came back on the second attempt because the net was closed. If not, the puck goes into the back of the net, and we live to fight another day. So, that’s where we didn’t agree with the call,” he said.
Brunet said he did not believe his goalkeeper intentionally fouled the net.
He said, “I don’t think just the physics of the push is what he was trying to do. I thought he missed the net. If the net had not moved, you would have hit the net.”
“Unfortunately, they didn’t see it the same way. And you move on.”
It was the Wild’s second consecutive win, making them 5–6–3 on the season. Nashville fell to 5–6–4, losing its second consecutive overtime game.
Stamkos said, “We definitely deserved much better. It’s definitely one of our best games of the season.”
