Rep. Susan DelBene (D-Wash.) said Sunday that Republicans are “all right” with the government shutdown prolonging.
“On one hand, Democrats want credit for shutting down the government to get the health insurance subsidies that you talk about, which is obviously important and consequential, but on the other hand, they say it’s Republicans who shut down the government,” NewsNation’s Chris Stirewalt told DelBene on “The Hill Sunday.”
“So, is that a credit to the Democrats or a blame to the Republicans? Reconcile the difference between those two messages,” he said.
“You know, the Republicans have shut down the government. They’re in charge of the House, the Senate. They have the White House. They’re the ones who need to lead to find a way forward. Everything is on them. They run everything in the House,” DeBene responded.
“We have not been in session for a month because Speaker Johnson has refused to keep the House in session,” he said, referring to Louisiana Republican Mike Johnson.
The Hill has contacted Johnson’s office and the White House for comment.
Since the beginning of the shutdown, the Trump administration has cut or halted funding previously approved for projects in Democratic-leaning states; Threatened to withhold outstanding salaries of furloughed employees; carried out more attacks on alleged drug boats while giving limited information to MPs; and re-appropriated tariff funds imposed without Congressional support.
National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has shared an artificial intelligence-generated video showing Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) praising the government shutdown — based on a real quote, but not in the way shown in the video.
