The Wall Street Journal editorial board is criticizing President Trump over his response to an ad launched by the Canadian government criticizing him over his trade policies that cites former President Ronald Reagan.
“Mr. Trump is wrong about the Reagan speech, and he was wrong when he said on social media that ‘Ronald Reagan liked tariffs for purposes of national security and the economy,'” Journal. wrote in an editorial Published on Sunday.
The newspaper argued, “Zipper was a free trader. In the 1987 speech, Reagan was trying to explain why he was making an exception to his free trade policies on semiconductor imports from Japan.” “Mr. Trump has been fortunate that his tariffs have not provoked too much retribution, which has saved us from a global trade war. But the tariffs are causing economic harm by raising costs for consumers and businesses and reducing the animal welfare that should have been growing with his tax bill and deregulation.”
Trump reacted angrily to the ad, which contained Reagan’s remarks criticizing the tariffs, calling the spot a “bogus” and ending all trade negotiations with Canada over the ad.
“He can claim all he wants about tariffs,” the Journal said. “…but it should not usurp Reagan’s business beliefs.”
