Virginia Amaka Agugua-Hamilton was fired as head coach of the women’s basketball program on Saturday.
Aguagua-Hamilton Cavaliers reach Sweet 16 for the first time since 2000. They went 70–58, including a 29–42 mark in ACC play.
Virginia became the first double-digit seed to reach the regional semifinals since 2022 and pulled off an upset in the tournament by defeating No. 2 seed Iowa in double overtime in the second round.
It became the first First Four team to advance that far before falling. TCU.
“I thought we had some good moments in that game,” Aguagua-Hamilton said after that loss. “But the third quarter got away from us. … We fell behind, but that has no bearing on our season or the growth we’ve had with our program.”
South Carolina Coach Don Staley, who starred at Virginia as a player, said he had just heard about the coaching change.
Staley said, “I contacted our athletic director at Virginia and he told me they parted ways. I don’t know why. We’ll talk.” “I reached out to Coach Mox to find out about him. I didn’t have time to chat with him. I don’t know what went wrong. He got them on the right path.”
Staley said he hopes Virginia gets it together.
Staley said of his alma mater, “We’ve got a deep rich tradition at UVA at this level, and we hope to get our team back there one day as soon as possible.”
