UConn women’s basketball finishes regular season undefeated

“When you’re fortunate enough to play 31 games and win them all, it’s something to be proud of,” UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. “There’s something good about it, and they should feel really good about it.”

The Huskies won their 47th consecutive win, tied for the fifth-longest in Division I history; UConn claims five of the top six streaks. The Huskies last lost at Tennessee on February 6, 2025.

The Huskies completed their flawless regular season in front of a crowd of 9,612, which filled the lower tier of Madison Square Garden for the venue’s first standalone women’s college basketball game.

Auriemma stressed that his team’s journey to a 31–0 season has not been easy, especially as his players face unparalleled pressure to “deal with the ghosts” of the program’s storied past.

And yet, the Huskies have made it that way on the court. Their plus-37.8 scoring margin this season is on pace to become the third-highest in DI history, surpassing the previous two UConn teams.

It was a similar day on Sunday for the Huskies, who outscored the Red Storm 24-9 in the first quarter to put St. John’s on edge.

The Huskies shot 57% on the night and forced 22 turnovers. Six of their players finished with at least nine points.

The pressure will intensify as UConn looks toward the Big East Tournament, where it will face either Georgetown or Butler in Saturday’s quarterfinals, and ultimately the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies have been the No. 1 overall seed in both opening bracket appearances.

Although the outside narrative has been that the Huskies are better than last season, Auriemma has rejected that notion, especially considering they no longer have superstar and No. 1 WNBA draft pick Paige Bueckers.

“I think when the NCAA Tournament starts, it’s definitely not going to be as easy as what we experienced last season,” Auriemma said. “I think someone like Paige can do that [take over the postseason]. We have such good players that they have as good a chance to win a national championship as anyone else.”

The coach has no dearth of talent. UConn has two potential All-Americans in Strong and azy fadMore options coming off the bench. But Auriemma knows the regular season doesn’t always have much of an impact on March. Last season, his team suffered three losses and was the No. 2 seed before a dominant performance en route to the program’s 12th national title and first since 2016. The last two times he had teams enter the postseason undefeated – 2017 and 2018 – both teams lost in the Final Four in disastrous fashion.

“Generally, the best team wins the national championship, but not always,” Auriemma said. “This is a team that comes together at the right time. We have a great group. We can do a lot of different things, and our defense has been really good all season. So if we stay in that mentality, we’ll have a chance.”

“There’s going to be a lot of ups and downs in the postseason, so I think everyone supporting each other and being there for each other will help us,” Strong said.
