Birmingham, Ala. — A uab Football player stabbed two teammates hours before team’s match on Saturday morning USFThe university said in a statement.
Interim coach Alex Mortensen said in a post-game press conference that both injured players were in stable condition. He said the team decided to play the final home game of the season out of respect for the graduating seniors, although the incident resulted in several players sitting out.
The university said the teammate suspected in the stabbing is in custody. The school did not release the names of the players involved.
Daniel MinceyAn offensive lineman who transferred to the school in May was arrested and booked that afternoon on charges of aggravated assault and attempted murder, according to Jefferson County Jail records. He was in custody in Birmingham and appears to be the only UAB player arrested Saturday.
It was not immediately clear whether Mincey had legal representation. Efforts to reach family members for comment were not immediately successful.
UAB officials would not confirm whether Mincey was involved.
The team’s online roster lists Mincey as a 6-foot-4-inch redshirt freshman from Pompano Beach, Florida, who previously played here. kentucky,
Mortensen said that once the team decided to play, the Blazers focused on their normal game-day routine. He said counseling is being made available for players who want it.
The coach declined to share further details about the incident, citing the ongoing investigation.
The stabbing took place on the premises of the Football Operations Building.
